My initial encounter with Dr Fox was before he had come to St.Michael's. When I completed my MA at St.Michael's and went to Washington, DC in 1985 to do my Ph.D.at Georgetown, Alice Thayer (at St.Michael's) gave his name (he was at American University) as someone I can contact in Washington. During my years at Georgetown, I had met him several times. Even though I was not his student, he has always been very accommodating. Nearly a decade later, sometimes around 1997 or 8, I reunited with him when I visited St.Michael's. (He was using Bettey Azar's Grammar Book and I translated the Japanese version of the book a few years before). I remember visiting his class and had a wonderful conversation. My encounter with him has been limited, however, he is one of the wonderful people in the profession who have influenced me a lot. It is a big loss not only for SMC but also for the profession. R.I.P.
