Obituary for Shirley Elizabeth (Elwood) Hogaboom

Shirley Elizabeth Hogaboom, 90, passed away peacefully Monday, September 19, 2022, with her family by her side at Birchwood Terrace Rehab and Healthcare, Memory Care unit in Burlington. She was born March 4, 1932 in Berkshire, Vermont to the late Ira and Gladys (Brich) Elwood.

Mom lived in Berkshire/Enosburg, VT until she married the love of her life Robert on 2/13/1960 and moved to Colchester to continue raising their family. Mom had many different professions in her long life. She was a longtime waitress at Bill’s Diner in Winooski, VT, a former hostess at Howard Johnsons until she began a new career at IBM, from where she retired. Mom and dad lived briefly in Florida before returning to VT. They eventually settled back in Enosburg before moving to their final home in Fairfax, VT.

Mom was very artistic and talented. She enjoyed creating flower arrangements and making porcelain dolls with her daughter Lisa. She was especially proud of the flower arrangements and bridal party bouquets she made for her daughter’s best-friend’s wedding. Mom enjoyed watching golf, country music shows, shopping, jewelry, the beach, looking for shells, crafting, dancing, and flower gardening. In her younger years, she enjoyed snowmobiling.
Mom loved all creatures great and small, but she especially loved all the dogs that came into her life. Mom had a fondness for flowers and hummingbirds.

She was a longtime 4-H Horsemanship Leader of her own 4-H group which provide many opportunities to travel to Washington, DC and to The Eastern States Horse Shows with other leaders and her 4-H girls.

She was a life-long member and past worthy matron of the Order of Eastern Star, Chittenden Chapter, which she was very active member and enjoyed tremendously.

Mom had a long and full life. She made many friends along her journey; however, none closer than her friend, Florence (Flo) McGill. She was friends with Flo for over 45 years and she thought and spoke of her often throughout the years, after Flo’s death in 1998.

She also had a very special sister-in-law, Jean Hogaboom, whom she shared a great bond with once they reunited again, later in life.

Although Alzheimer/Dementia robbed mom of her quality of life, we are sure she held tight to the memories locked within her mind of her family and friends. “Don’t ask me to remember; don’t try to make me understand; let me rest and know you are with me; kiss my check and hold my hand”.

Shirley is survived by her children Lisa Campbell and husband Brian of Colchester, Deborah Elwood-Lanoue and husband Skip of Orange City, Fl; Bryan Hogaboom and wife Margit of Adams, New York; grandchildren, Dean (Jen), Celeste, Chris (Bobbie), Chad (Lindsey), Le-Ann (Bobby), Melanie (Jeremy) and Scott. Her brothers Dale Elwood (Louise) of West Virginia; Lester Elwood (Alicia) of Rutland. Many great and great-great grandchildren along with nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Shirley was predeceased by her husband Robert “Bob” Hogaboom who recently passed on June 24, 2022. Additionally, she is predeceased by her son Robert “Bobby” Hogaboom; daughter Bonnie Mathieu, grandson Freddy Mathieu, granddaughter Rita Mathieu and her sister’s Ester Elwood and Louisa Elwood.
