Monkton, VT– Maureen Theresa McGann died on April 24 at the UVM Medical Center in Burlington at age 73. She was born in West Rutland, the oldest of nine children, to Thomas J. McGann Sr. and Mary (McCormack) McGann. She graduated from Mount Saint Joseph Academy in Rutland in 1963 and briefly attended the University of Vermont. When she was in her twenties she worked in the restaurant business in Stowe, VT. She then married her first husband, Harry Atkinson of Natick, MA, and they purchased a two-hundred year old log cabin on 18 acres of land in Monkton. After she and Harry divorced, she continued to live in Monkton until her death with her second husband, Kirby Bridge, of Bridgewater, VT. After her marriage to Kirby, she became a breeder of hybrid wolfdogs and sold her dogs to clients from far and wide for several years. She also personally named the dogs before selling them. She was well known for giving great haircuts to family and friends. She was a graduate of O’Brien’s School of Cosmetology in Burlington in 1974. She was a free spirit who loved her family and expressed her love often through her poetry and holiday and birthday cards.She was an avid reader and an exceptional cook and was known for her family gatherings at the log cabin in Monkton. Some of the dishes that she prepared became legendary. She was predeceased by her father, Thomas J. McGann, Sr and leaves behind her husband, Kirby, her mother, Mary McGann Porter, and her eight siblings: Pappie McGann Oakman (Alan) of Canaan, NH, Kathleen McGann Schneider (Bill Davison) of Burlington, Thomas J. McGann Jr. (Jill) of West Danville, Peter McGann of Rutland, Mary McGann (John Barrows) of Monkton, Eileen McGann Dudley (Dennis) of Colchester, Brian McGann of Northfield, and Joeen McGann Duerbeck (Jim) of Ira. She also leaves behind several brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

A burial service is planned for Sunday, May 19 at 11am at St. Bridget's Cemetery, Main Street in West Rutland. A Celebration of Life follows at 12pm at Sweet Caroline’s in West Rutland. In lieu of flowers contributions in Maureen’s memory may be made to the Humane Society of your choice.
