Obituary for Brent Chase Whitney

Brent Chase Whitney (67), of Grand Isle, Vermont and Southport, North Carolina passed away on Saturday, August 13 at University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington, VT. He had been in the wonderful care of many medical professionals at UVMMC for almost 4 weeks. All were working hard to help find a way to health for him. Ultimately his organs couldn’t fight any longer and he passed peacefully, surrounded by loved ones. His family would like to thank his medical teams on McClure 6 and MICU for their tireless efforts and the care that they provided him during his fight.

Brent was born August 31, 1954 in New Bedford, Massachusetts to Elliott Gilman Sr. and Barbara Chase Whitney. At an early age, his family moved to Vermont, where he spent his youth in Barre, Vermont and graduated from Spaulding High School in 1972. He was a talented athlete, participating in many sports throughout his life including, soccer, racquetball, and golf. In his later years, golf became his true passion. He graduated from The University of Vermont with a B.S. in Civil Engineering and went on to run two companies, one an engineering firm in Williston, VT and the other a land surveying company in St. Croix, Virgin Islands. In his free time he enjoyed coaching and watching his daughters play soccer and of course playing golf with his many friends and family members who also enjoyed the sport. He had a love for collectible cars and had begun to create his own collection over the last several years. Most of all, Brent took great pride in creating and maintaining his properties in both Grand Isle and Southport. Particularly in Grand Isle, he poured his heart and soul into fixing up and making it a beautiful place for family and friends to enjoy. This property will serve as a wonderful memorial and a place family can gather for years to come to share in all the wonderful memories they have of Brent.

Brent is survived by his daughters, Nicole Davignon and Danielle Hall, Danielle’s husband, Jerrod Hall, Brent’s grandchildren, Fern Davignon, and Connor and Wesley Hall, as well as Nicole and Danielle’s mother, Lois Whitney. He is also survived by his brother, Elliott Whitney Jr. and sister, Kimberly Dennis, many nieces, nephews and cousins, as well as his partner in North Carolina, Donna Ackerman and his beloved dog and best friend, Quito. He is predeceased by his parents, Elliott Sr. and Barbara Whitney.

Brent’s family will host Calling Hours on Friday, September 16th, 5:30 pm- 7:30 pm at his property in Grand Isle. Brent loved to watch the beautiful sunsets over Lake Champlain, so the family plans to be there for sunset time (approximately 7pm) and would love for all who wish to enjoy it with them. The address is 3 Camp Vermont Court, Grand Isle, VT 05458. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, September 17th at 1:00pm, also at his property in Grand Isle. His family will be scattering his ashes in a private ceremony both from atop Camel’s Hump and into Lake Champlain, two of his favorite iconic landmarks in the state Brent loved and called home, Vermont.
