My sympathy on your loss. After knowing so many of you over the years, it was a pleasure to meet Elaine at Brownway this winter. Even though she was slipping away from the world at that time, Jim's devotion to her and her general appearance attested to the lady she was.

I was hurrying through my day, trying to get the time to visit my Grandmother, Gaga as I had just been told that she was nearing the end. As I drove to the home, I felt a sense of urgency as though there was not much time left. When I arrived, my sister, Maegan and cousin, Suzanne were patiently keeping watch. We talked and laughed, discusing fond memories while patiently waiting for Gaga to rest. We put on a tape of Grandpi playing piano and when he began singing, "My Way" our grandmother took her final breath. When I used to deliver babies with the Amish communities, I was told that the people who are supposed to be at a birth will be there. I have come to feel that way about death as well. You can never forsee how you will pass from this world, but as I think of my Grandmother's death, I hope that the future holds for me such a loving and fitting end.

I met Elaine in 2009 and we spent a lot of time together. In the summer we would sit out on the front porch and she would look at the old barn and talk about her horses. She loved to talk about the horses and where they used to be. She would always be surprised at some of the bird songs that we would hear, and we heard some pretty strange ones! On some days Elaine would tell stories of her past, these were always interesting and I was always amazed at the details she still remembered. I will miss our hearing her stories but will keep them with me always....
