Christmases Past
For the past three days, I have been recalling past Christmases. Mom was great at making Christmas a time of joy. I remember when I was 3 and wanted a merry-go-round from Santa. I don't know how she did it, but under the tree I found a little tin merry go-round with a crank to turn the animals and play music. I remember how she loved to tell the story of when David was still young enough to believe in Santa and he crept downstairs early in the morning and exclaimed, "Mom, he really came!". One Christmas Eve, when I was much older, I had brought cross-country skis for her and Dad. I wanted to put them under the tree after they went to bed. I didn't know that there was something for me that she wanted to place under the tree that night. We both sat there sipping brandy or CC and ginger waiting each other out!! As it got later and later, we finally had to make an agreement to do our "secret" Santa work together and just go to bed. On Christmas, I remember the bountiful breakfasts of scrambled eggs, bacon, and coffee cake. After Dad died, Mom sometimes spent Christmas night with me. I remember the good talks we had. On the day after Christmas, we would drive over to Paper Peddlar in the Champlain Mill to buy beautiful wrapping paper on sale. There are so many other memories but these are the ones most prevalent in my mind today. Delia
