Ingrid Thompson Andersen, 93, of Richmond, Vermont passed away comfortably on the evening of September 6, 2015 at the Vermont Respite House.

She was born Ingrid Solveig Thompson on January 16, 1922 in Mandal, Norway to parents Oscar (Osker) Johan Thompson and Anna Salveson Thompson. Ingrid’s parents emigrated to the US shortly after WWI, and at that time 'Americanized’ their last name from Kjaer to Thompson. Even though Oscar and Anna had emigrated and located in Brooklyn, Ingrid was actually born in Norway. She arrived in the United States in late 1922 aboard the S.S. Stavangerfjord accompanied by her mother and older brother Thomas S.

Ingrid graduated from Great Neck High School in 1939 and earned letters in several sports. Over the years she lived in Virginia, Wisconsin (she always loved to say ‘Baraboo’!), and various parts of New England. She worked in NYC for advertising agencies and Time magazine, and proudly became top administrative assistant to Time founder Henry Luce. She met Sigurd Clarence Andersen, whom all knew as Carl, and they wed on November 11, 1950.

They moved to Long Island, specifically Syosset, to raise a family, and continued in Martinsville, NJ. Ingrid and Carl later resettled to Hendersonville, NC. To complete her whirlwind of places lived, Ingrid moved to Vermont in 2007.

Ingrid swelled with Norwegian and Thompson pride. Ingrid was active in the local libraries, swam and played volleyball when younger, went hiking and walking when older, and participated in a myriad of Bridge clubs and Mahjong groups. Ingrid loved to be social, and could often be caught in or enticed into a ‘case of the giggles’ with some of her dearest friends and especially with her fellow ‘Parsley Sisters’, cousins Irene and Ethel.

Ingrid played her piano regularly, and always liked to keep her hands busy as demonstrated by the dozens and dozens of rugs, pillows, wall hangings, and Christmas ornaments that are family treasures.

Ingrid is survived by immediate family members: daughter Karen Anne Andersen of Goffstown, NH, Kevin Carl Andersen (Melissa P.) of Richmond, VT, and grandson Erik Carl Andersen of Richmond, VT.

Ingrid is predeceased by her father Oscar, her mother Anna, her stepmother Johanna, her husband Sigurd C. (Carl), and her beloved brothers Thomas S. and Oscar J.

The staff and volunteers of the Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) of Chittenden and Grand Isle Counties Hospice Program and the Vermont Respite House truly deserve thanks for their support, and it is suggested people support them as well. Also, please make the effort to spend time with those you love, or those that need your love.

There will be no services in Vermont, and a private graveside ceremony will be held at a later date in Connecticut.




Ingrid often recited a poem that is believed she had written in High School.

Here’s to the moments that are stolen
and stealing is certainly wrong,
for after those moments are stolen,
to whom do they actually belong?
So if a wife never cares to claim them,
and her husband never makes a fuss,
lets hold our heads up proudly,
and say they belong to us...
